Isle of Arran tour: SOLD OUT

This full day excursion will visit the Isle of Arran focusing on the relationship between its landscape, geology, parent materials and soils. The circular tour provides superb views of the changing coastline and dramatic mountains of this scenic island and includes a visit to the Lagg Whisky Distillery and a local geological exhibition. Soil aspects of the tour include inspections of a Histosol, its development and subsequent use as a source of domestic fuel; a Stagnosol of agriculturally ‘improved’ and drained lowland pasture; a Cambisol of upland sheep pasture, a Podzol under recent commercial forestry management; and an Umbrisol under long-standing mixed woodland in the grounds of a castle!

Tour leader: Richard Hewison & Ben Butler

Richard is a Plant Ecologist, Soil Surveyor and Landscape Historian at the James Hutton Institute and has been involved in soil survey in Scotland for over 10 years. Ben is a Soil Mineralogist and Soil Surveyor also at The James Hutton Institute.
